World Veterinary Day Celebrations

Each year, the Uganda Veterinary Council (UVC) joins the global veterinary community in commemorating World Veterinary Day, a landmark event dedicated to recognising the indispensable role of veterinary professionals in animal health, public health, food security, and national development. The celebrations provide a national platform for public awareness, professional engagement, and community outreach, bringing together veterinarians, veterinary paraprofessionals, farmers, students, policymakers, and the general public. Activities typically include public education campaigns, stakeholder dialogues, field demonstrations, and panel discussions that highlight contemporary issues affecting the veterinary profession. Annual themes focus on priority areas such as animal welfare, zoonotic disease prevention, One Health, antimicrobial resistance, and sustainable animal production.

World Veterinary Day also offers an opportunity to recognise excellence in veterinary service, celebrate professional achievements, and inspire young people to pursue careers in veterinary science. Through these commemorations, the UVC strengthens public trust in veterinary services, reinforces the profession’s role in safeguarding human and animal health, and promotes a shared commitment to responsible and ethical veterinary practice in Uganda.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Workshops

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is a cornerstone of professional excellence and public trust in veterinary practice. The Uganda Veterinary Council (UVC) regards CPD not merely as a statutory requirement but as a vital professional obligation that ensures veterinary practitioners remain competent, ethical, and responsive to emerging animal health, public health, and food safety challenges.

UVC-accredited CPD workshops provide structured opportunities for veterinary surgeons and veterinary paraprofessionals to update their knowledge and skills in critical areas such as disease surveillance and control, diagnostic and clinical techniques, animal welfare, veterinary public health, antimicrobial stewardship, pharmaceutical regulation, biosecurity, and emerging technologies in veterinary medicine. Equally important, CPD activities reinforce understanding of professional ethics, regulatory compliance, and responsible veterinary practice under the Veterinary Practitioners Act, 2024.

Participation in CPD is mandatory for annual licence renewal and retention on the professional register. This requirement ensures that all practising professionals demonstrate ongoing competence and commitment to lifelong learning. CPD enables practitioners to adapt to scientific advances, evolving regulatory standards, and the changing needs of farmers, consumers, and the wider food system. For professionals, CPD enhances career progression, professional credibility, and service quality. For farmers and other animal keepers, it translates into better animal health outcomes and productivity. For consumers and the public, it safeguards food safety and public health.

The Council enforces CPD compliance through clear regulatory requirements, accredited training providers, documented CPD point systems, and periodic audits. Failure to meet prescribed CPD obligations, without reasonable cause, may result in delayed or denied licence renewal, suspension, or other regulatory action, in accordance with the law. These enforcement mechanisms are designed not to penalise, but to uphold professional standards and protect the integrity of veterinary services in Uganda.

Through CPD workshops, the Uganda Veterinary Council fosters a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and excellence within the profession. By embracing CPD, veterinary professionals affirm their commitment to high standards of practice, ethical conduct, and service to animal health, public health, and national development.

Annual Veterinary Conference

The Annual Veterinary Conference is a flagship professional forum convened under the auspices of the Uganda Veterinary Association (UVA) and Uganda Veterinary Praraprofessional Association (UVPPA) to advance excellence, innovation, and accountability in veterinary practice. The Conference brings together veterinary surgeons, veterinary paraprofessionals, researchers, policymakers, educators, students, and key stakeholders from the animal health, food safety, and public health sectors.

The Conference serves as a national platform for the dissemination of scientific knowledge, presentation of research findings, and critical dialogue on emerging and priority issues in veterinary medicine and food systems. Core thematic areas typically include animal disease prevention and control, veterinary public health, food safety, antimicrobial resistance, animal welfare, biosecurity, One Health, climate-resilient animal health and production, and innovations in veterinary science and service delivery. Through plenary sessions, technical panels, and practical workshops, participants gain exposure to evidence-based practices, regulatory updates, and global trends shaping the veterinary profession.

Participation in the Annual Veterinary Conference is strongly encouraged as part of a practitioner’s Continuous Professional Development (CPD) obligations. Attendance contributes accredited CPD points and supports compliance with annual licence renewal and retention requirements under the Veterinary Practitioners Act, 2024. By integrating the Conference into the national CPD framework, the Council ensures that professional learning remains structured, measurable, and aligned with national and international standards.

Beyond knowledge acquisition, the Conference provides an invaluable networking and partnership-building opportunity. It enables professionals to exchange experiences, strengthen collaboration across disciplines, engage with regulators and policymakers, and contribute to shaping the future of veterinary regulation and practice in Uganda. For practitioners, this translates into enhanced professional competence and career growth; for farmers, improved quality and reliability of veterinary services; and for consumers and the nation, stronger safeguards for animal health, food safety, and public health.

The Uganda Veterinary Council uses outcomes from the Annual Veterinary Conference to inform regulatory guidance, professional standards, and policy recommendations. Through active participation and structured engagement, the Conference reinforces a culture of lifelong learning, ethical practice, and continuous improvement—hallmarks of a credible and trusted veterinary profession.
