The Uganda Veterinary Council actively engages in policy discussions at local and national levels to advance animal health, ensure public safety, and support the veterinary profession. Our advocacy is guided by science, professional ethics, and a commitment to the well-being of our nation. This page outlines our official position on critical legislative and regulatory issues.

Our Current Legislative Priorities

As the Uganda Veterinary Council, our advocacy efforts are focused on the following key priorities:

Securing National Disease Surveillance Funding: Advocating for increased government investment in early-warning systems for zoonotic and animal diseases.

Regulating Online Veterinary Pharmacies: Developing clear policies to ensure the safety and efficacy of veterinary drugs sold online.

Key Advocacy Areas

Animal Welfare

The UVC advocates for policies that are scientifically grounded and promote the humane treatment of all animals. We believe that good animal welfare is a cornerstone of a healthy and compassionate society.

Our focus includes: Stronger enforcement of animal cruelty laws, national disaster preparedness plans for animals, and science-based standards of care for companion, farm, and wild animals.

Scope of Practice

Protecting the public, animals, and the integrity of the veterinary profession from unqualified or unsafe practices is a core statutory mandate of the UVC. The Council ensures that all acts of veterinary science and animal health care are performed only by duly registered, licensed, and appropriately supervised professionals, in accordance with the Veterinary Practitioners Act, 2024, and subsidiary regulations. A clear and enforceable scope of practice safeguards animal welfare, public health, food safety, and consumer confidence, while also protecting qualified professionals from unfair competition and malpractice.
